This one occurred to me only tonight: If moose are members of the deer family, why do we call a baby moose a "calf" when a baby deer is a "fawn"? (which now brings up the question, what is a baby elk called? Not to mention a baby caribou?) _________________ These baby pandas all want to read A Generation Back by Cat Feral.

Baby reindeer/caribou are "calves" too, apparently. WP uses the word, at any rate (and, FWIW, a baby reindeer is definitely a kalv in Swedish).
Baby elk/wapiti seem to be "calves" too.
As to why, WP claims the rule is that large deer have calves, smaller ones fawns. That'd explain moose and wapiti, but hardly reindeer, who aren't terribly big. One suspects it's a post hoc rationalization. _________________ Reach for the stars and you'll burn your hands.

Ah, thank you. As you say, it sounds like there may be a bit of post hoc rationalization going on, but it's more information than I had before! _________________ These baby pandas all want to read A Generation Back by Cat Feral.

Why do various online services, most recently Yahoo, insist on one providing answers to idiotic preset "secret questions" for the purpose of resetting one's password? Why can't I chose to forgo that functionality in favour of a more secure account? _________________ Reach for the stars and you'll burn your hands.

What the "L" is going on with Fiction Alley???
http://www.fictionalley.org/
ETA: Never mind. Apparently the problem is not with the site itself, but with my connection. (suspect I've been suspended for some unintentional offense, or series thereof.)
Oddly, I do seem to be able to get onto the site by clicking the link I just posted here. Strange... _________________ These baby pandas all want to read A Generation Back by Cat Feral.

Does anyone know if bagels cause constipation?
(I wasn't sure whether to post this question here or over in the "Food" forum.) _________________ These baby pandas all want to read A Generation Back by Cat Feral.

Okay, maybe it's not too surprising that nobody answered my bagel question. Here's another, slightly less awkward one:
A couple of decades ago, some people were saying "I've got to book." meaning "I've got to leave." Does anyone know where this expression came from? _________________ These baby pandas all want to read A Generation Back by Cat Feral.

Seems like there'd be a simple enough way to find out if bagels cause constipation ...
"I've got to book" is likely short for "I've got to book out", as if from a hotel. Not sure if I've ever heard it, tho. (Perhaps not a big surprise if it was popular two decades years ago - I started learning English in 1993.) _________________ Reach for the stars and you'll burn your hands.

It seems nobody is sure where "booking it" came from. The two most likely explanations I've seen are:
"Booking it" in the sense of booking a reservation, such as for a cruise ship: something that you'd want to hurry to get - "that sounds like a one-way ticket to a good time, and I'm booking it!"
A distortion of black American slang "boogie", which was used to describe someone moving quickly - "he boogied on out the back door the moment her old man got home!" Boogie is also slang for a quick, erratic dance.
Either way, around here in Kentucky, I still hear this used from time to time, in the sense of someone moving very quickly: "man, he really booked it the moment the cops showed up!" _________________ "All hello... recently glanced and such saw here gibberish: Cthulhu dimensional shambler black abyss blood sucker... will there be utterances on this topic ?" - babuirskdiaslow

Thanks, TLC and Yron! That's more than I knew before!
As for the bagel thing... well, I was just wondering if there was a connection. _________________ These baby pandas all want to read A Generation Back by Cat Feral.
